I am currently working on illustrating 2 new picture books which will be out in 2009, so I do not have anything new to show. This piece "Happy Halloween" is one of my most popular illustrations. It is also available as a fine art print in my shop. It's been great to see a showcase of such wondferful talent here every week. I will miss the Showcase. Best to everyone here with all of your endeavors. ~ Kate

A series of 6 leveled readers that I illustrated for Seedling Publications has just been released. Best wishes to all of the Picture Bookies Showcase members!

Artist Choice- Final weeks

Well since this is the last week of Picture Bookies Showcase and I've just now got some really good images to show I'm just going to post an illustration blowout! My apologies to the creators for the rule breaking;) These three illustrations are all from books that I did this summer for Lifeway Christian Publishers 2009 Vacation Bible School series.
The first one is from a lift the flap book titled Friends. This is the "main" or background illustration. Read my blog www.fabulousillustrator.com to hear more of the story behind the creation of this book.

This second one is from a book called I Can Thank God. Its a small board type book for preschoolers. Each page has some small text about what we can thank God for in the Australian outback. This page was for "dogs that sing". The text was placed in the moon.

This last one was a cover for the recreation leader guide titled Recreation Rock. The theme for 2009 is life in Australia so here we have a kangaroo having a great time bounding down the side of Ayers Rock.

Christmas Pageant

As a full-time freelance illustrator, I usually have numerous projects going on at once. So in addition to the trade picture book that I'm working on, I'm also illustrating a bunch of Christmas cards right now that are for Christmas 2009. Yep, one and a half years away! Greeting card companies work far in advance, just like picture books.

Last week I read Peter Pan as part of Jacqui Robbin's Remedial English Lit Summer Project. We're reading 15 classics in 15 weeks. I had never read Peter Pan, so I figured this was a good time. Here's my cocky, young Peter.

I drew the kids in my sketchbook as quick pencil sketches, then scanned them, resized them in Photoshop, added the background, and shaded them using Photoshop brushes. So this is mostly a digital illustration. I plan on using it in my chapter book/middle grade illustration portfolio.

After pointing out that my characters were always pretty, a fellow illustrator in my crit group challenged me to create a "less than perfect" subject. She reminded me that not everyone should always be perfect in Picture Books! Since I realized how right she was, I've had much more fun! It really loosened me up and gave me a new perspective. This is one of my favorite characters!

Hello all, I've been a member of this blog for some time now but never actually managed to post anything to it (sorry!). So here's my first attempt:

These are some sketches and a coloured piece for a new book. These won't appear in the finished product, I'm just trying out characters and techniques. Drawings are in biro, coloured piece is all digital.

If you want to see more of my stuff follow the links below (if my website doesn't work, try again later, it's hosted on .Mac which is becoming MobileMe this week and keeps on not working)....

A couple fun summery sketches from my sketchbook. When I create new characters like these, I try to show a distinct personality in each one through the pose of the body, facial expression, hairstyles, clothing choices, eyebrows, the amount of body movement, and so on. There are so many wonderful ways to give your characters life and personality.

After being transported across country from her HOME in California, a forlorn caterpillar finds a way to make her way back home.
From "The Adventures of Cali" by Michele Lallouz Fisher and illustrated by Ginger Nielson*:)

Home

I sketched this about a year ago from the window of the Great Reading Room in the Nashville Public Library. At the time I thought the roofs below the window would be a great place to get away from the city, sometimes the places you get away to really become home. Interestingly, this part of the city has become home to a lot of our city's homeless folks. I can't help but think that a library is a great place to call home.

Artist's Choice

Today marks 10 years of my being a full-time freelancer, so its kind of a celebration. I did this piece as a promo and I'll be sending it out as a poster announcing my "anniversary." I wanted to create a piece that reflects what I think making a living as an illustrator is like: exhilarating, scary, dramatic, there's always something to reach for. Go to my blog fabulousillustrator.com to read the whole story.
